DRÖNRAID - WHO KILLED DISFUCKER?

The cover of the demo

I found out about this band through Billy Crustie, the best (but now sadly ended) YouTube channel when it comes to this kind of music. The video description read "Raw punk from Melburne, Australia, Who Killed Disfucker? brings 5 tracks of chaotic noise, including a Disclose cover", and with that you already roughly know how it'll sound. The bigger question is if it's good.

Well, is it?

The tape starts off with an explosion in the form of 'Society Screams'. It's a bouncy sort of sound on the drums (which of course play d-beat), crude distortion on the strings (that play fitting riffs for the style) and a slight reverb on the screaming vocals (which seems to be standard fare at this point, I don't know why but since it works I don't have any complaints). The tape continues with 'Cease To Exist' which probably is my favorite track - all the elements I just described are turned up to eleven. This is where I started to see some vague similarities between Drönraid and Nagasaki. Great stuff!

The slow one, 'Will To Live', is per usual my least favorite. Not that it's bad, I'd imagine it can make people move when played live, but for me personally I'd rather have them going full blast at all times. Speaking of which, they're back at it on the next track - 'Hell On Earth'. It's just a great raw punk discharge overall, with backup vocals on the chorus (sounds great, why aren't they present on the chorus on all tracks?). This one also has my favorite riff out of the whole tape. All that remains after this is their Disclose cover, which is 'Conquest', and they nail it as far as I'm concerned.

So, to return to my initial question; is it good? Of course it is. The sound on this tape sits somewhere between "just like how I want it" and "that cool, slightly blown out, punk demo sound", so while I doubt they'll sound the same on a proper LP I really like this for what it is. I would've picked this tape up immediately if I lived close by or saw them at a show (shipping from Australia and/or the US isn't really giving us Europeans any bang for our buck, so to speak). There's 200 of these made (well, 200 according to the original cover art, 100 according to Distorted Sedition), which is a lot more than usual (I mostly see runs of 30-50), but I still wouldn't sleep on it because sooner or later it'll still be too late. Especially if people out there share my taste. If you don't care about physical media then it's also completely free to download on their Bandcamp.
