SVAVELDIOXID - MISÄR O.D.

Omslaget till Misär O.D.

Yes! Svaveldioxid are back with yet another album and it sounds just as brutal as ever. As I said in my top 10 punk of 2025-list: The guitar sound is really mean and the bass has this snarly quality to it, while the drumming is on point when it comes to d-beat. A lot of unapologetic sections of tried and true pummeling. On top of this the stern vocals deliver attention-grabbing lyrics. It's what I've come to almost expect, in a way, from Svaveldioxid. It never feels like they're repeating their last release, however, rather they bring a lot of familiar elements which keep me coming back for more.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's go back and start with a closer look at the presentation. There's 500 albums pressed, 400 black and 100 red/blue. To me it looks like it's a blue vinyl on which a large amount of blood has been spilled, really cool. The eye-catching cover art is drawn by the drummer, Robin, who's been creating artwork for years. If you'd want to hang it on your wall you're in luck, because included is also an A2 poster depicting a reworked variant of the cover, as well as a sticker.

On the vinyl there's a total of eight tracks and they're all great. No intros, no duds, no weird ones, it's just exactly what we came here for without nonsense. The lyrics are great as usual, fiendishly crude imagery that conveys a much needed sincerity. My favorite tracks are 'Zionazis' (I share their absolute hatred of those fucking monsters), 'Inre Uppror' and 'En Död Snut Är En Bra Snut'. 'Trauma' is great as well. And 'Världens Avskum'. And... well, I guess you can tell I'm loving this album.

I bet the overall BPM is about the same as it always was (I remember calling one of their albums a bit slower and they said "really? it's one of our fastest", so I obviously don't know what I'm talking about :D), but the pacing of specifically the vocals feels a bit slower this time around. Still just as grim though! Perhaps even more so as a result.

And speaking of grim, there's something quite sinister about the riffs. Well, Svaveldioxid have of course never been upbeat or cheerful, but this time it's somehow even more prominent. They've been, as previously discussed, incorporating a bit of death metal in their music for a while and this time they really hit the money as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't sound like they play käng and then add some twists of death metal here and there. It doesn't sound like it's added for texture. It sounds more like the melody itself is inspired by death metal, if that makes sense? I realize I'm struggling to explain what I mean, but you'll understand once you listen to the album. This time it's deeper ingrained and, paradoxically enough, this make it sound even more like pissed off and serious käng.

I also want to write some critisism because that's my assignment and I don't want to be that guy who won't write anything bad, but I'm having difficulties finding anything I'd change. Well, I did turn up the bass a bit to achieve the weight I want and it seems I've been doing this on quite a few of their releases. But this comes down to personal preference (and, I guess, differences between playback equipment). So I wouldn't file this under critisism as much as a plain observation. And that's what our equalizers are for anyway, right?

Failing to find anything sub-par I must conclude that this album is a real banger, one that I'll come back to time and time again for the foreseeable future.
