SYSTEMKASSEN / DISAPPOINT

The cover to the split tape

Both bands on this tape are pretty standard fare when it comes to dirty and heavily distorted d-beat raw punk, and as you all should know by now - that's a good thing in my opinion. Pressing play on this I expected, and wanted, a noisy discharge filled with primitive sounding instruments and pissed of vocals - and that's exactly what I got.

Disappoint didn't disappoint (!) with their five tracks of dis styled d-beat, one of which is a Skitslickers cover, and Systemkassen which was a new acquaintance for me really got me hooked right away with their spiteful jargon and fast pace. After listening to the tape a couple of times I decided I should review the thing and spread the word of its existence, so here we are.

Disappoint from Jyväskylä released their first tape 'Peace... Achieved By War' back in 2024 and during 2025 they appeared on the compilation tape 'Regulations Vol. 1' released by Splatter Tapes as well as on this self-released split with Systemkassen. There's also a split with Dispose coming up, but that's for another day.

The guitar and bass sound really crunchy together, it's like they create one single noise instead of being two separate entities and that leaves a lot of room for the drums to really do their thing - which is to churn out that glorious d-beat. The lyrics are centered around the raging wars, the ever present nuclear threat and the ongoing genocide. As dark as can be.

They've really doubled down on the dis format but not through mashing it all together into a wall of noise, but rather by making each component as raw as they can make it on its own. And I like it, I must have listened to their tracks 10 times in a row by now (letting them repeat as I write) and I don't feel tired of them at all. If anything I think I'll leave it on once I'm done with this review.

Systemkassen from Tampere also began in 2024 from what I can see, first with their 'Demo 7/24' and then later that same year 'Oktober Skitfest'. They took a few tracks from each of these and used them on this split with Disappoint.

Systemkassen has a certain attitude in their lyrical themes that reminds me of early Diskonto (no other immediate similarities) which I really appreciate. The lyrics themselves however are not written like Diskonto wrote lyrics at all, they are much shorter and to the point in a way that make them sound more like summaries of what a longer text would be about. Instead of writing two verses and a chorus about a topic they just sum up what they want to say with the song in one or two lines tops and that's that. Pair this with the fact that the vocals are like a mix of T.B (Asocial) and Oskar (Crutches), meaning they sound broken and defiant at the same time, and you've got something really cool. It sounds like anger fuelled by betrayal straight out of the gutter. At first I thought the tracks were a bit too short (they're all between 13 and 45 seconds) but like I said, the lyrics are usually not longer than a few words each so what would be the point in repeating them for a longer period of time?

I have no idea if this is a room recording in their rehearsal space or if it's live, but I suspect the former as I don't hear an audience between songs. In any case, because of this it's more of a dirty sound on Systemkassen's side. A few tracks are also a lot faster, but mostly it's the same sort of dis d-beat raw punk which makes me a very happy camper.

It pains me that I missed this tape when it was available, instead I have to be on the lookout for it on the second hand market. But at least there's the digital uploads to hold me over in the meantime.
