WHOSE REALITY? - DEMO

The cover of the demo

This cassette was recorded almost a year ago and then released on R.I.P. Peace Records last August, but I found out about it just the other day and that surprised me because I'm very fond of bands like Yellowcake, Tørsö and Bombardement - which Whose Reality? heavily remind me of. How come I missed this for almost an entire year, damn it? Oh well, I'm listening to it now.

This Australian band formed back in 2024 and took off during 2025 with a demo that sold out twice (as I've understood it once locally and then also internationally) and they also featured on the compilation 'Under the blade of a zionist nightmare Vol IV'. Since I just found out about them the "sold out" part applies to me as well which pains me more than I thought it would because the tape is great.

What it sounds like? Like I said it's hardcore d-beat in the vein of the aforementioned bands (there's also hints of Zyfilis and, well, the list can go on) which means there's fast and melodic riffing, blistering d-beat and reverb ridden vocals on the verge of breaking out in outright screaming. Someone once described it as "d-beat hardcore you can dance to" and I'm inclined to agree.

There's six tracks on the demo, all of which are good. My favorites though, are 'Bled Dry' and 'Your Tax Dollars'. I think it's something about starting in full speed, then slowing down somewhere mid-track and picking the speed back up again immediately that I particularly like. 'Ad Nauseum' is also a favorite come to think of it, probably the most "foot tapping friendly" one on the tape. The weakest track, for me, is 'Weight To Bear'. I don't know if it's necessarily because it's the slow one, but make of that as you will.

A photo of two of the cassette versions being laid out in detail. The tape to the left is neon green while the tape on the right is white. In front of them there's the unfolded j-cards.

The various tape versions are cool as hell, the design is made to look like they belong to each other sort of like a set. I love it when bands do this, have a bit of fun with the cassette format and take advantage of the fact that you can have different colors and so on. Not sure if it's a slip cover or an O-card though, the former is fine, but the latter is frustratingly awkward - they take up less space than a regular cassette so they stand out in a cassette storage system and they brake immediately if you try to bring them anywhere... Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.

At the start of this week I had no idea who Whose Reality? were, now they're cemented on my radar (I know "cemented on my radar" doesn't make any sense at all but I'm sure you get what I mean, if not then send your questions to leavemealone@mail.com) as a band to keep my eyes on. A lovely cassette that I absolutely would have bought if I knew about it sooner.

Talk to Whose Reality?
